Daihatsu Motor said on Friday its consolidated net profit in the April-June [fiscal Q1] period tripled from a year earlier to an all-time high of JPY20.56bn thanks to booming sales of fuel-efficient cars including the Mira e:S minicar.
The Toyota Motor group unit told Kyodo News sales surged 36.1% to a new high of JPY448.65bn due in part to government subsidies to encourage eco-friendly car sales and a recovery in demand that fell after last year’s earthquake, while overseas sales were strong particularly in Indonesia.

The company stood by its earlier earnings forecast for the year to 31 March, estimating group net profit at JPY70bn, up 7.5%, on sales of JPY1.67 trillion, up 2.4%, even though an end to the government subsidy around August may have a dampening effect.
