UK vehicle test and development organisation MIRA is setting up a R$12m (US$7.5m) laboratory in Brazil to test electromagnetic interferences.

In order to get specialised workers, the British company has signed a contract with US-based MSX International, a company operating in Brazil since 1994 with automotive customers such as Ford, GM and Volkswagen.

Automakers already operate similar, smaller scale labs in Brazil.

“But there are no large ones, capable of conducting tests on heavy trucks, for example”, MIRA managing director Arnaldo Canales told Autodata.

New onboard devices will require demanding tests on electromagnetic-generated interferences, both indoor and outdoor, in crucial vehicle electronic systems.

New launches by veteran brands and an array of newcomers seeking local production facilities will ensure growing demand for services.

MIRA’s plans, however, are more ambitious. Together with other laboratories, it is eyeing a technical centre and a large, independent proving ground (only GM and Ford have such facilities here).
