An illegal strike has halted production at Toyota’s Prospecton plant in Durban since Monday afternoon, the company confirmed.
Toyota is South Africa’s largest vehicle manufacturer, producing 120,000 vehicles a year, half of which are exported. Earlier this week the company said that it planned to invest in Durban to increase production.
Company spokesman Leo Kok said management was in talks with workers and the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa in a bid to resolve the dispute which was said to be linked to wage demands.
