September registration data showed that New Zealand new car sales were down 9.7% (614 units) year to 5,684 units but commercial vehicle registrations were up 18% (298 units) to 1,944.

“In spite of all of the supply constraints the new vehicle market is still ahead on a year to date basis in both the passenger car (up 4% to 47,621) and commercial vehicle (up 16.5% to 16,189) segments” said Perry Kerr, chief executive officer of the Motor Industry Association.

“The industry has had a bumpy ride but has managed to meet market demands. There is still some catch-up in the market so hopefully sales will remain positive for the last quarter of the year” he said.  

Toyota topped the passenger car segment with 990 registrations giving it just under 17.5% market share. GM’s Holden was second with 578 registrations (10.2%) followed by Hyundai with 493 registrations (8.7%). The automakers are also in the same order year to date.

In commercial vehicles Toyota continued its domination with 553 registrations. Mitsubishi was second with 215 followed by Holden with 177.  

With supplies from Japan restored, the Toyota Corolla was again the top selling passenger car with 367 registrations and also reclaimed top spot year to date with 2,456 sales. Mazda had a strong month with the 3 the second best-selling model (227 registrations) and the Suzuki Swift was third with 199 registrations.

In the commercial segment Toyotas were the top two models with the Hilux remaining the top selling commercial vehicle with 300 registrations followed by the Hiace van with 211. In third place was the Holden Colorado with 163 registrations.
