New vehicle sales in the Philippines were flat in September at 12,555 units, compared with around 12,600 units sold a year earlier, according to data released by Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines Inc (Campi).

The data excludes sales from several brands which broke away from the association at the end of 2010. The largest of these is Hyundai, followed by Subaru.

Year-to-date sales for the January-September period fell by 3.5% to 105,663 units, compared with an adjusted 109,517 units sold in the year earlier period. The association attributed the sluggish demand to continued tight inventories of key models, following disruption to automotive production operations in Japan earlier this year.

Passenger car sales increased fell by 2.4% in the January-September period to 35,485 units, while commercial vehicle sales fell by 4.1% to 70,178 units.
