To meet demand in Asia, Autoliv has opened a new seatbelt plant in Cibitung near Jakarta, Indonesia.

The new plant will help boost sales in Indonesia from US$12m last year to $25m by 2015 and to $50m when the plant is fully utilised, the supplier said.

The plant will replace the company’s existing Indonesian plant and supply Toyota, Daihatsu and Nissan, Autoliv’s main customers in Indonesia.

The new plant has a floor space of nearly 2,500 sq m and, initially, 170 employees all transferred from the existing plant. Capital expenditures is $3m.

Light vehicle production in Indonesia is expected to grow by over 20% this year to almost 1m vehicles. Indonesia, with 240m people, is one of the fastest growing economies in Asia.

Autoliv entered Indonesia in 2002.
