Amercian Honda is recalling around 273,000 Honda and Acura vehicles to check airbags.

It also plans to inspect an additional 603,000 vehicles to check if the same potentially faulty airbags were used in cars repaired after accidents.

The recalled vehicles are model years 2001 to 2003. The defective air bag on the driver’s side deploys with too much pressure causing a metal inflator casing to shatter.

“The propellant was packed improperly and that allows the propellant to burn off too quickly and it explodes, and pieces of the casing are causing the injuries,” said Honda spokesman Chris Martin.

Honda has previously recalled vehicles for this issue and the latest campaign raises the total of affected vehicles in the US to over 2.5m.

This recall does not affect any cars produced after the model year 2003.

So far due to this defect, 18 injuries and two deaths have been reported.

“This is a very serious thing; people need to get their cars fixed. This is not something to wait on,” Martin said.

The latest recall now includes 2001 and 2002 Accord, 2001 to 2003 Civic, 2001 to 2003 Odyssey, 2002 and 2003 CR-V, 2003 Pilot, 2002 and 2003 Acura 3.2 TL and 2003 Acura 3.2 CL vehicles.
