Demand remains low though the US government’s aid to the domestic auto industry is having an effect, General Motors’ chief operating officer has said.

Asked if there had been any change following the receipt of loans from the outgoing Bush government, Fritz Henderson told El Mundo: “The truth is yes. And, what’s more, it was immediate.”
“In the last 10 days of December we saw an increase in visits to showrooms. But demand still remains at very low levels,” Henderson added, according to Reuters.
Chrysler’s financial unit was the latest to benefit from around $20bn in loans made to GM and Chrysler so far – it received $1.5bn on Friday.
“We are starting to see easier access to consumer credit,” GM’s Henderson told El Mundo.
