“We have stopped production [from Monday] for three days because of a lack of orders,” VW spokesman Piotr Danielewicz told Agence France-Presse.

He said another production halt at the plant in Poznan in western Poland was planned from 23 to 27 February.

VW has made similar production cuts in Germany while CEO Martin Winterkorn last week was quoted as saying that sales fell 15% in January.

Poznan employs around 6,000 people making the Caddy, Caddy Max and Transporter T5 light commercial vehicles.

The company has required staff to use up holidays during the production break and temprary workers’ contracts have been terminated, Danielewicz said.

VW built a record 176,400 vehicles in Poznan last year, according to AFP.
