Exports of US made vehicles to the Middle East, Africa and Latin America may spread the US ‘pedal recall’ to those markets as well though climatic conditions may mean the problem of friction-related wear is less likely.

A company spokeswoman said Toyota and its distributors were considering what to do about the vehicles, noting that condensation – which contributes to the pedal problem – was less likely to build up in hot climates.

“The same problems are unlikely to happen but we found the same pedals are being used,” she said.

The group has identified 40,000 Avalon 2005-2010 and Sequoia 2009-2010 vehicles in the Middle East with the problem pedal.

In addition, 80,000 vehicles in Africa and 60,000 in Latin America are affected, she said, without specifying which models.
