Nissan’s Mexican operation is closing two plants for seven days due to a slump in U.S. demand for the Sentra compact, plant union representative Alfredo Gonzalez Gonzalez said.

The union spokesman said 12,000 workers at the two factories – a car assembly plant and a components plant – fear that the shutdowns are a prelude to job cuts.

Gonzalez said the plants have shut down from March 7 to 9 and will close again for a further four days some time before mid-year.
