Vehicle sales in Vietnam rose by 76% to 6,961 units in January, compared with depressed year-earlier sales of 3,958 units, according to data released by the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA).

Passenger car sales rose by 79% year-on-year to 2,172 units, from 1,215 units, while sales of SUVs, MPVs and cross-over vehicles were up by just 3% to 1,442 units. Commercial vehicles posted the biggest sales increase, of 150% to 3,347 units.


Toyota’s sales rose by 31.8% to 2,212 units, with the Vios, Corolla and Innova model in demand. Second-placed VinaMotor reported an 18.6% rise to 1,298 units, helped by a sharp jump in commercial vehicle demand. Truong Hai, which sells Foton and Kia vehicles, reported an 18.6% increase to 822 units.
