South Korea’s carmakers took a record 5.7% share of the global car industry in 2009, building 3.513m of the 61.295m vehicles produced worldwide, according the Korea Automotive Manufacturers Association.

The data ranked the country fifth in a league table of automakers based on domestically-produced vehicles. Overseas production by Hyundai, Kia and GM Daewoo was excluded.

The association said Korea produced 8.2% fewer cars last year than in 2008 due to the worldwide decline in demand.

In Japan production fell 31%; it was down 34% in the US and 14% in Germany.

China’s production grew 48% and India’s by 13%.
