Electric vehicle manufacturer Aixam Mega says it is introducing a new AC motor drivetrain for its Mega e-City urban vehicles and Mega Multitruck commercial ranges, to give enhanced performance and reduce maintenance requirements.

The new AC motor is being installed across the Mega e-City and Mega Multitruck ranges, and vehicles with the new drivetrain will be on show for the first time at the Commercial Vehicle Operator Show at the NEC, Birmingham, in April.

The firm says that this vehicle upgrade gives users between five and ten per cent more range, depending on road conditions and driving style, and acceleration improvements quoted at 30 per cent for the Mega e-City and ten per cent for Mega Multitrucks.

With a higher power output, the new vehicles offer enhanced slope capacity, Aixam says. With less stress on the components, and no brushes to maintain, vehicle operators can expect lower maintenance costs and longer component life, the firm claims.

Aixam Mega national sales manager Justin Bond said: “Mega electric vehicles require minimal maintenance and, with this new product upgrade, we have managed to reduce this requirement still further.

“That means optimal reliability, lower costs and less downtime for operators of Mega electric vehicles, alongside enhanced performance.

“This latest introduction is part of Aixam Mega’s ongoing programme of product development to ensure that businesses and private motorists in the UK have access to cost-effective, practical electric vehicles today.

“The alternative is to wait perhaps years for other manufacturers to produce new, completely unproven electric vehicles that will carry a heavy price tag.”

Other modifications to the new Mega electric vehicles include a new battery temperature sensor and a new current sensor for enhanced control of the charging process, and a boost mode switch (in place of the Hi/Lo option) for better performance on an incline.

There is also an enhanced braking system that improves driver feel and gives more regenerative current, the firm says.
