The United Auto Workers (UAW) union has reached a tentative agreement with New United Motor Manufacturing Inc (NUMMI) on the closing of the Fremont, California, factory next month. The pact covers approximately 4,500 UAW members.
The union said the agreement would be presented to members within days; informational meetings and voting dates were yet to be scheduled. Details were being withheld pending a ratification vote by the membership.

Established as a joint venture between General Motors and Toyota Motor in 1984, NUMMI began building the Toyota Corolla and an OEM variant for GM called the Geo Prizm. It most recently built the Pontiac Vibe, Toyota Corolla and Tacoma pickup. As part of a structured bankruptcy, General Motors axed the Pontiac brand in 2009 and Toyota subsequently said it would close the facility on 1 April.

Earlier this month, Toyota’s US unit promised $250m to help the NUMMI workers. The automaker said it had pledged the money to “fund transition support” for staff.
