Ford is planning to launch the Ford Mondeo in India in July according to industry sources. The move would reinforce Ford’s position in the Indian car market and expand the upper medium segment. It also marks a further extension to Ford’s global volume on the generic CD132 platform, upon which the Mondeo is built. In Europe, the latest version of the Mondeo model was launched in the final quarter of 2000. The Mondeo will be imported to India completely knocked-down (CKD) form. It is likely that the car will be launched in a two-litre diesel engine version initially, with a petrol model introduced later

It is reported that Ford plans to make modifications to the car to suit Indian operating conditions, including reinforced suspension. The arrival of the Mondeo will take Ford’s model offerings in the Indian market to two – the other model being the Ford Ikon. The Mondeo’s main competitors in the Indian car market will be the Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata and Daewoo Magnus.

Ford sees the two model strategy as essential to securing long-term growth in India after the success of the Ikon model, launched two years ago.
