Two importers of Ford motor cars said Monday (14/8/00) they will recall 1,104 Ford Explorer sports-utility-vehicles (SUVs) equipped with the controversial Bridgestone/Firestone tyres, according to Kyodo News Service/Associated Press (14/8/00).

The tyres on the SUVs – 726 of which were imported between August 1996 and December 1999 with the remainder imported between November 1990 and September 1992 – will be replaced free of charge, the importers said.

The tyres could burst if used at speeds in excess of 160 kilometers per hour at low air pressures and in very high temperatures, said the importers.
