Global roll-out will be completed by the end of 2012.

“News media analyses of government data consistently validate that GM’s safety record on this issue is among the strongest in the industry,” said GM global product operations vice chairman Tom Stephens.

“At the same time, we know safety is top of mind for consumers, so we are applying additional technology to reassure them that they can count on the brakes in their GM vehicle.”

GM added its roll-out plan would “balance the speed of implementation with validation” to reassure customers there would be no deterioration in drivability.

The initiative comes in the wake of Toyota Motor Corporation’s (TMC) worldwide recall following accelerator pedal issues.

TMC has announced it will incorporate a brake override system (BOS) into new production models, starting worldwide in 2010.

The BOS will automatically reduce engine power when the brake and accelerator pedals are applied simultaneously.
