Toyota Motor Europe (TME) has announced a voluntary recall of around 7,500 units of Land Cruiser 150 (Prado) and Lexus GX 460 models on the continent.

The recall will reprogramme the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) software to improve its responsiveness in what the company describes as “very limited circumstances.”

TME has reacted following a report in US magazine Consumer Reports which maintained the Lexus was a safety risk.

The company notes that when drivers make a sharp turn at high velocity or negotiate a curve to the right at “excessive speed,” on vehicles equipped with the optional kinetic dynamic suspension system, there is a “possibility for the car to slide out.”

TME insists the situation is controllable, but is due to “insufficient activation of the VSC system when the vehicle is driven under certain extreme driving conditions.” It adds the recalled vehicles are safe to drive in normal conditions.

Affected vehicles in Europe are only left-hand drive versions – no right-hand drive models fall under the recall.

Right hand drive models have a different weight distribution and do not have the same issue.

Vehicles are the Toyota Land Cruiser 150, available across Europe and the Lexus GX 460, only available in certain Eastern European markets. An unspecified remedy for the problem has been announced by Toyota Motor Corporation.

All customers owning one of the involved models will be personally notified in the coming days. To date, there have been no reports of complaints or accidents linked to the issue in Europe.

No other Toyota or Lexus vehicles are affected by this recall action in Europe.
