The Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) union on Friday announced a tentative deal to cut costs at General Motors’ Canadian operations that will pave the way for a major GM restructuring package.

CAW President Ken Lewenza told Reuters the union had made sacrifices but that it had also preserved wages and pension benefits.
“We have a tentative agreement that was struck at 11 o’clock last night with General Motors and was given the approval of the government at 11 o’clock last night,” he said.
The deal must be approved by union members over the next few days. In the United States, the United Auto Workers and GM agreed to a package of concessions on Thursday (21 May).
