Toyota plans to introduce a version of its long-serving Crown large sedan model with a petrol-electric hybrid-drivetrain, the Nihon Keizai newspaper said.
Like the company’s pioneering hybrid Prius small sedan, the Crown will use rechargeable batteries and a petrol engine to reduce fuel consumption yet provide plenty of power, the newspaper said.

But the new car will rely more on its petrol engine than the Prius, the newspaper added, quoting Toyota sources.
The Crown hybrid drivetrain costs about half that of the Prius system but is not as efficient and emits more carbon dioxide, the Nihon Keizai said.
It added that the Crown hybrid will retail for about 4 million yen ($31,675), compared with the Prius pricetag of about 2 million yen.
