Japan’s top finance bureaucrat Kazuyuki Sugimoto said on Monday that problems at General Motors were not causing major turmoil for the Japanese auto sector.

But he added that Japan would closely watch developments at the US automaker to avoid any impact on the Japanese economy.

“We can’t say that there won’t be any impact in the process of rebuilding GM,” the vice finance minister told a news conference, Reuters reported.

“Each Japanese maker has been taking steps accordingly so I don’t see big confusion occuring,” he said.
