Jianghuai Automobile Company (JAC) is reported to be in negotiation with Slovakian authorities to potentially invest in the country.

Reports in the Slovakian press cite the economics ministry noting JAC is considering building an assembly plant there. The Chinese automaker would join Volkswagen, which builds large SUVs in Bratislava, and Hyundai Motor unit Kia which opened a ‘greenfield’ car plant there several years ago to assemble the Ceed line and has since added small Hyundai and Kia-branded SUVs to its range.

Both Hyundai and PSA have plants in the neighbouring Czech Republic; the PSA plant is a JV with Toyota and assembled 205,000 Peugeot 107, Citroen C1 and Toyota Aygo cars last year.

“We are negotiating conditions of our entry to your market with Slovak officials,” the economy ministry quoted JAC’s David Wang as saying.

“Therefore, I do not want to be specific about the size of the investment in this phase. All I can says is that it is about passenger cars and light trucks,” he added.

Volkswagen’s Slovakian unit is to manufacture SUVs from its plant in Bratislava in three shifts as of today, local media reported.
