The use of GAZ-owned factories to make Opel cars is part of the deal that saw Canada’s Magna and the Russian bank Sberbank beat Fiat to take a controlling stake in Opel from its struggling US parent General Motors.

Speaking to reporters, the Nizhny Novgorod region’s minister for industry and innovation, Nikolai Satayev, said production is expected to start at GAZ’ facilities that were created for the production of Volga Siber cars, according to a local report from Prime-Tass.

He added that he expected demand for Opel cars to be higher than for Volga Siber vehicles.
