Both CEO Sergio Marchionne and the Italian Industry Minister Claudio Scajola  have made remarks in the past two days that they feel the deal remains a possibility.


Marchionne said today that the deal was not technically closed. “The interest is still there, it doesn’t depend on us,” he said.


Meanwhile, Italy’s Industry Minister Claudio Scajola said on Thursday (4 June) that comments from the German government “may mean that six months from now” Fiat’s bid will be “reconsidered”.


Late last week, the German government announced that Canadian parts company Magna in partnership with Russian bank Sberbank had won a race to acquire Opel.


However, German Economics Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg has since said that the deal struck with Magna is non-binding at this stage.
