The 2002 Ford Explorer
Ford is to buy a diesel engine from DaimlerChrysler for European versions of the new Explorer.

The Europe-bound diesel Explorer will be built in the U.S. and launched late in 2001.

Ford sold the previous model Explorer in Europe with only a four-litre petrol engine and automatic transmission.

In contrast, rival DaimlerChrysler offers its current Cherokee and Grand Cherokee with a diesel engine and manual gearbox option.

The new Liberty, to be called the Cherokee in Europe, will also get the diesel engine/manual option.
