Vehicle sales in Indonesia grew by 90% year-on-year in April to 65,122 units, compared with 34,299 units a year earlier, according to data compiled by local industry association Gaikindo. This is the vehicle market’s second-highest monthly total – just below the record 65,368 units sold in the previous month.

Last month’s growth was driven by particularly strong demand for commercial vehicles, as the economy continued to rebound from last year’s slowdown. Volumes more than doubled to 19,615 units, from the depressed 8,944 units in April 2009.

The country’s GDP expanded by 5.7% year-on-year in the first quarter, driven by strong domestic demand thanks to low interest rates, and by a rebound in exports. This level of growth is expected to continue at least into the second quarter.

Sales of passenger vehicles in April rose by close to 80% to 45,507 units, from 25,355 units a year earlier. The bulk of these are MPVs and SUVs. Sales of passenger cars, as classified by the association, more than doubled to 2,993 units.

Total vehicle sales for the January-April period increased by 78% to 238,680 units, compared with 134,050 units in the first four months of 2009.
