There is a mile exterior restyle and uprated interior plus new high-efficiency EcoBoost petrol and TDCi diesel powertrains.

Similar updates were made to S-Max and Galaxy models earlier this year.

Ford of Europe chairman and CEO John Fleming said: “This is the smartest, safest, most environmentally friendly and best quality Mondeo we have ever launched, and it completes the regeneration of our CD segment range in 2010.”

New front bumpers include LED daytime running lights (DRLs soon mandatory in the EU) and re-designed rear lights also now with LEDs.

The interior has a new flow-through centre console, new door trims and a new central overhead console featuring ambient lighting.

The Mondeo will be the first Ford to offer a higher performance 240PS version of the two-litre EcoBoost turbocharged petrol engine, additional to the 203PS version launched in Mondeo, S-Max and Galaxy earlier this year.

Average CO2 emissions are the same 179g/km as the 203 PS unit.

The revised Mondeo is also first to get an updated 2.2-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel engine with power up 12% to 200 PS, complementing 115, 140 and 163 PS versions.

Smart regenerative charging, eco mode and new active grille shutter system, an electronically controlled device that regulates the airflow through the radiator and engine compartment to reduce aerodynamic drag, and improves the fuel economy and warm-up performance in cold climates, are available.

A six-speed PowerShift double wet-clutch transmission system is standard with EcoBoost petrol engines and optional with the diesels.

Lane departure warning, driver alert and auto high beam are new options and the Mondeo also gets blind spot information system, speed limiter, rear door power child locks and rear view camera options introduced with the earlier S-Max and Galaxy updates.

Sales start in September.
