Opel bidder RHJ International has not ruled out selling the automaker back to General Motors after returning it to health, its chief executive told a German paper.

“Let us be pragmatic. It won’t work without General Motors,” Leonhard Fischer told Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung.


The newspaper said Fischer was explicitly not ruling out the option of selling Opel to GM after RHJ had completed restructuring.


German chancellor Angela Merkel has said Magna was Germany’s preferred partner for Opel, Reuters noted.


Separately, the news agency reported that the Opel Trust, a German body responsible for Opel since June, said at the weekend it had not made any decisions yet regarding the takeover offers.


It said GM had not yet made a recommendation nor submitted a request for the trust’s decision.
