Toyota
is to start two-shift assembly operations at its new French plant in July. The
plant in Valenciennes began production in January 2001 and should be ramped up
to full-scale single-shift working next month.

Toyota initially planned to produce only 60,000 vehicles in France in 2001
even though the new factory has a capacity of 150,000. But adopting two-shift
working will allow production to be boosted beyond the initial projection.

Around 195,000 Yaris models were sold in Europe during 2000 but the French
