Toyota
is to start two-shift assembly operations at its new French plant in July. The
plant in Valenciennes began production in January 2001 and should be ramped up
to full-scale single-shift working next month.
Toyota initially planned to produce only 60,000 vehicles in France in 2001
even though the new factory has a capacity of 150,000. But adopting two-shift
working will allow production to be boosted beyond the initial projection.

Several hundred workers will be added to the current 1,100.
Around 195,000 Yaris models were sold in Europe during 2000 but the French
plant currently produces less than one third of the 2001 volume – the rest
are still being imported from Japan.
