Two major Russian automakers have resumed production after unprecedented high temperatures forced a shutdown.
GM-AvtoVAZ said it had started building the Chevrolet Niva sports utility vehicle again today (9 August), while GAZ Group has also resumed work according to reports in Moscow.

Temperatures around the 40 degree Celsius mark have caused widespread fires across Russia, with Volkswagen’s plant in Kaluga shutting last week for example, as smoke posed potential breathing difficulties for employees.
Reports in Russia also indicate GAZ Group will continue with six-day working – as it did in July – to cope with rising demand.
From 21 September, GM-AvtoVAZ said it will introduce two eight hour shifts, five days per week.
