The ix35 (a ‘teaser photo was issued last week) will replace the Tucson – production of which started earlier this year at affiliate Kia’s plant in Slovakia alongside that brand’s similar Sportage – and makes its world debut at the Frankfurt show next month.

Design cues seen on ix35 will be carried over to other new Hyundai models, most notably the pronounced hexagonal grille which “will become a recognisable family attribute”, the automaker said.

“The ix35 has a smaller footprint than C-segment hatchbacks and MPVs, meaning it will also appeal to buyers who are seeking a more stylish alternative to conventional cars.”

Hyundai claimed more refined powertrain technology will enable the new crossover “to deliver markedly better fuel efficiency and lower CO2 emissions than rival SUVs and compete head on in terms of running costs with mainstream hatchbacks”.
