Work has resumed at Renault’s Grand Couronne warehouse near Rouen, following a massive fire yesterday (24 August) that completely destroyed one of three buildings at the depot.

The site – stocking Renault engines, gearboxes and exhausts destined for France and Spain – caught fire yesterday morning, requiring 100 firefighters to attend.

The blaze took several hours to extinguish with local residents being told to stay indoors and shut all windows.

Renault is now planning how to replenish its destroyed stock estimated to be worth tens of millions of euros, sourcing some from its Sandouville plant in Normandy.

“The [cause] of the fire has still not been determined – an investigation is in place,” a Renault spokeswoman in Paris told just-auto. “For the moment some of the activity has been tranferred to other sites.

“This will not slow down our production as we put in place a system to replenish stock straight away.”

The 330 employees at the Rouen site had only returned to work this week following the annual summer holiday. Two members of staff were in the destroyed building at the time of the blaze but there were no injuries.

The site at Grand Couronne forms part of Renault’s international logistics network and is near the northern French ports of Rouen and Le Havre.
