He said: “”We have pledges from 50 firms in Israel that plan to replace company cars with 35,000 electric cars starting in 2011,”

His firm is developing an electric car concept with the Renault-Nissan alliance and Agassi confirmed previous reports that vehicles would come from Renault.

Better Place has developed a system of easily replaceable battery packs which extend the range of electric vehicles without having to wait for recharging.

The company is also working on a network of charging stations so vehicles can be topped up while their owners are at home, work or doing their shopping.

Agassi estimated that Renault electric cars would be more affordable than petrol-fuelled vehicles. The automaker is to present four electric prototypes at the Frankfurt motor show tomorrow, from small city cars to utility vehicles.

Partner Nissan unveiled its first EV, called the Leaf, in Tokyo last month.
