Mitsubishi Motors Corporation is to supply batteries from its new-generation i-MiEV electric vehicle  to Kyokuto Kaihatsu for use in garbage collection trucks.


Current compactors on collection trucks run on power from the truck’s engine. This means that during garbage collection and ejection the engine must always be running, increasing noise and environmental pollution in the process.


Kyokuto Kaihatsu has been developing electric-powered compactors for its trucks for a number of years.. During development, it was found that the battery system used in MMC’s i-MiEV fulfilled the necessary specifications for an electric-powered compactor.


Its use will cut truck CO2 emissions by 75% and reduce engine noise. CO2 emissions are zero when the engine is turned off during compactor use. With almost no noise and no gaseous emissions during compactor use, the new truck is optimal for rubbish collection from within buildings early in the morning or late at night.


Electricity to run the trash compactor costs significantly less than diesel fuel usually used in normal compactors.
