“The Russian car market is objectively the largest in Europe and it is capable of fast recovery after the crisis,” Putin said.
Volkswagen expects car sales in Russia to increase to 5.6m units by 2018, VW CEO Martin Winterkorn said at a ceremony marking a switch from SKD to CKD assembly at the country’s plant. It is making VW and Skoda models and adds Audi in November.
In 2009, car sales in Russia were expected to fall 60% year on year to about 1.4m units, industry and trade minister Viktor Khristenko said earlier this month.
