The Toyota Prius remained the top selling car in Japan for the 18th consecutive month in November according to figures from the Japan Automobile dealers Association.

The hybrid came out top with sales of 21,400 units in November based on sales rankings by car model. However, its sales dropped 20.2% year on year due partly to the end of the government’s sales subsidy programme for eco-friendly cars in September.

Honda’s Fit [Jazz] compact car, which added a hybrid model in October, ranked second with sales of 16,677 units, down 2.9%, followed by the Daihatsu Tanto minicar in third with 13,217 units, up 25.8%.

Sales of new imported vehicles, including those made by Japanese automakers overseas, jumped 34.3% from a year earlier in November to 19,052 units, the Japan Automobile Importers Association said.

Of the total, sales of Japanese-brand cars, trucks, and buses more than tripled to 5,964 units, while those of foreign-brand vehicles rose 6.4% to 13,088 units. Nissan was top with sales of 4,243 units. Volkswagen came in second with sales of 2,852 units followed by BMW with sales of 2,700 units.
