It has been reported that the Thai government are planning to use ethanol commercially as an alternative fuel for local vehicles by the year 2002, according to a report of the National Ethanol Committee.

The Chairman of the National Ethanol Committee, Alongkorn Polabutrm, was quoted as saying that the committee decided to push for the commercial use of the crop-based ethanol by 2002.

A complete master plan on the issue of the commercial use of ethanol would be worked out shortly, he said. During the drafting of these proposed plans, all parties concerned from both the public and private sectors would be invited to contribute.

The alternative fuel is produced from many crops, namely cassava, maize, and sugar cane.
