The result includes sales of Mercedes-Benz, AMG, Maybach and Smart brand vehicles worldwide.


Daimler chairman Dieter Zetsche said growth should be sustained in 2008 thanks in particular to the first full year of sales of the new Mercedes C-class and the addition of the station wagon, and the new Smart Fortwo.


Mercedes-Benz accounted for 1,186,300 sales, up from 1,148,500 a year earlier. US sales were up 2% to 253,400, while sales in the Asia/Pacific region were up 12% to 141,200 units. Growth in both regions was driven by the C-Class and SUVs. Sales in China were up 53% to 26,900 units.


C-Class sales rose to 261,500 units, up from 166,400 a year earlier. S-Class sales were virtually flat compared to a year ago at 85,500 units (2006: 85,900). SUV sales totalled 180,1000 units, up from 169,500 in 2006.


Smart sales were 100,600 units in 2007, down from 112,100 in 2006. The largest market for the new Fortwo in 2007 was Germany with 31,000 units sold. The car goes on sale in the US this month.


Around 400 Maybach vehicles were delivered in 2007.
