Ford of Europe’s vice president, legal, governmental & environmental affairs, Wolfgang Schneider, told Automotive News Europe (ANE) that his company intends to offer “ultra-low CO2 products at affordable prices on a large scale.”

Ford will disclose details of its new model at the Geneva motor show which opens with press preview days from tomorrow (4 March).

The Fiesta ECOnetic will be only slightly more expensive than the conventional Fiesta. Volkswagen group, with its VW Polo BlueMotion and Seat Ibiza Ecomotive, already has two models at 99g/km.

Environment-friendly small cars produced by Opel, Renault, Fiat and PSA/Peugeot-Citroen are all above the 100g mark.

Ferdinand Dudenhöffer, director of the Centre for Automotive Research at the University of Gelsenkirchen in Germany, told ANE he expects a boom in low-emissions models.

“These low-emission models are the mass-market cars that can make a real difference and become very popular,” he said.
