The new vehicles would be equipped with environment-friendly diesel engines that can pass Europe’s tough emission standards, Dow Jones said, citing the Monday edition of the Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun newspaper.

Other Japanese car makers will likely follow Nissan’s example and introduce diesel versions of their luxury brands for the European market, the report added.

An Infiniti Europe spokesman confirmed the EX and FX models would get a diesel V6 developed in conjunction with Nissan alliance partner Renault from 2010. Unlike Renault, the Infiniti unit would be for rear or all wheel drive applications, he noted.

The company currently has a major presence at the Geneva motor show where it launched the FX50 SUV last week and plans to begin a four-model Europe-wide roll-out of petrol-powered models from next October.
