The Economic Times said Tata Motors is expected to phase out its existing heavy and medium range trucks, replacing them with the world truck.

Iveco and Tata Motors had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in February 2007 to evaluate the feasibility of co-operation in the commercial vehicle segment. The MoU covers engineering, manufacturing, sourcing and distribution of products, aggregates and components.

If found feasible, the two companies would ink definitive agreements.

Tata Motors is developing the world truck along with its subsidiary Daewoo Commercial Vehicles on a completely new platform. The report said trucks powered with 185-565 hp engines will compete with the likes of similar products from Volvo, Nissan, Mercedes Benz and MAN.

The world truck is expected to be launched in international and domestic markets by August-September this year. “The world truck up to 300 hp (horse power) will be launched in India; the higher hp models will be for global markets,” said P Telang, ED, Tata Motors.

Price is a critical factor in the commercial vehicle segment and the company is trying its best to keep the prices of its new range as competitive as possible.
