Volkswagen may build an engine plant in the US, to support its planned new assembly plant there.

According to Financial Times Deutschland, an engine plant could be viable if Volkswagen manages to grow sales in North America to around 1m units, as planned.

The newspaper reported that Volkswagen and Audi sales could reach the 1m threshold within a few years, having sold around 565,000 last year.

Volkswagen is planning to increase sales in North America to around 1.5m units in 10 years.

Yesterday, Automobilwoche reported that Volkswagen has narrowed its search for a new plant in the dollar zone to the south eastern US states. States such as Georgia and South Carolina reportedly have the best change of winning the new plant.
