Ichikoh Industries and Harison Toshiba Lighting have jointly developed mercury-free
high intensity discharge (HID) headlight systems and plan to start supplying vehicle
makers in 2003.

Automakers are expecting tighter controls on hazardous substances such as mercury
and the Japanese Auto Manufacturers Association (JAMA) had asked component suppliers
to develop substitutes.

The new headlight uses an electronic controller in place of a glass mercury
switch and is said to be almost as bright as a conventional HID unit.
