Colombia’s
vehicle market grew 19.3 percent in May compared with April, due mostly to a 71
percent rise in light pickup sales, the official Colombian Brands Committee figures
show, writes Juan Carlos Vargas.
The rising pickup sales are a clear sign of recovery in the domestic economy
because this type of vehicle is again being bought by small and medium businesses
rejuvenating their ageing fleets.

For the five months to the end of May, locally-assembled vehicles increased
their market share 5.1 percent to almost 60 percent while the slice taken by
imported vehicles decreased 10.3 per cent.
General Motors, which has just launched its GM BuyPower buy-on-line website,
led the market in May with 34.5 percent market share followed by Renault, which
has just launched the extensively revised Clio II, (18.5 percent).
Mazda was third (10.6 percent) and Daewoo, which was affected by a change in
its key taxi model from the ageing Cielo to the newer Lanos, was fourth (9.1
percent). Hyundai (5.4 percent) came in fifth.
