Latvian car sales during the first eight months of 2008 declined by some 34.9% on last year to 14,830 cars, according to the Latvian Authorized Car Dealers Association.
In August, 1,450 new cars were registered in Latvia, the lowest monthly figure so far this year, the association said.
Toyota was the most popular brand in the Latvian new car market in the eight months, with 1,793 new cars registered. Volkswagen was second with 1,595 registrations and Skoda was third with 1,206 registrations. Honda followed with 871 registrations, off 52.9 percent on last year.
Most manufacturers saw declines against the worsened economic backdrop, but some brands bucked the trend – including Nissan, Lada and Fiat.
