Although Brazil didn’t even get the Argentina-built second generation Ford Focus, the latest version is being sold there just six months after European launch.
Like the US (where the first generation Focus sedan is still in high demand), three-box sedans are strong sellers in this segment in Brazil.
The compact-medium segment in Brazil shows a strong presence of sedans, lead by Honda’s Civic and Toyota’s Corolla.
Ford do Brasil is attempting to invert the current Focus 70-30% hatchback-saloon mix.
Considerable investment in marketing strategy and dealer network training is taking place and Ford says it has narrowed the price gap between the two body styles to just 2%.
The sedan offers one of the largest boots in the segment (18.6 cu. ft., according to the automaker) and interior room is spacious.
Previous versions with 1.6-litre flexible-fuel engines putting out 102 bhp (on petrol) and 111 bhp (on ethanol) are still produced, yet repositioned lower. The old saloon, however, will be phased out soon.
The new Focuses will be powered by 2-litre/143 bhp petrol engines only.
Ford says it is anticipating the launch (delayed) of flexible-fuel engines – expected in six months.
