“The increase of 13% against the backdrop of the falling global sales is a very positive result,” the company said in a statement cited by a Russian news agency.

The company attributed the increase largely to strong sales of off-road and SUV models.

So far this year Volvo has sold 5,400 of its large XC90 off-road SUVs, a 34.2% year on year rise plus 2,400 XC70s – up 14.8%.

Volvo Car Russia president David Thomas said at the start of 2008 the Ford-owned automaker intended to boost Russia sales 42.3% year on year to 30,000 units.
