Daimler is offering voluntary redundancies for the first time in the US.

The move follows production cuts at Mercedes factories in Germany which will be achieved by such measures as extended Christmas holiday closures.

The 4,000 workers at the the Appaloosa, Alabama, SUV factory making M- GL- and R-class SUVs have been offered voluntary departure deals but the company reportedly has not set a target until it establishes the acceptance rate by the end of the year.

Financial help, healthcare benefits and job-hunting assistance are said to be on offer but Mercedes has not publicly announced details.
