New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. (NUMMI), a JV between Toyota and GM, is planning to cut one shift of pickup truck production in January at its Freemont, California, plant. It’s another sign of the impact of slowing vehicle demand in the US.

NUMMI will halt second-shift production of the Toyota Tacoma pickup on Jan. 5, said Lance Tomasu, a plant spokesman.

There are currently no plans for layoffs.

NUMMI has about 4,800 employees, of which 4,000 are represented by the United Auto Workers.

NUMMI makes the Tacoma and Corolla sedan for Toyota and the Pontiac Vibe wagon for GM. Car production isn’t affected by the truck cutback, although overtime has been eliminated for car-line workers and a Saturday production shift for the Corolla/Vibe in December has been cancelled.
